BLACK SAND BEACH

When you opened your hands when you were born

And you died just as little

speechless still reaching forward

Then how you opened your hands when you died

And you lived just a little

Maybe only on the inside

Well I came here trying to stay alive

washed by the black sand beach

Reaching towards the crinkled sea

Did you see me?

Your father was a gambler

You’d say your father was a saint

Driving too fast, liquor in the back, your sister just babe

You said your mother never looked up

She said she never looked away

Never let her hold you, not a single day

When you opened your eyes, when you were born

Did you cry just a little

Scared to face the world

They said you opened your hands when you were dying

and lived for a little more

Just grasping at a line

They say my mother was a fighter

I think my mother was afraid

She was ready for a challenge but not willing to be changed

If she could have let go

At the chance of being saved

Could she walk into the endless sea

Take a look back at me

And let it be

Just let it be

Let it be

When you opened your eyes when you were born

you lived just a little

Only ever looking forward

And I came here, hoping to mourn you

Fingers on the black sand beach

That reach into the crinkled sea

Did you see me

Oh did you see me
