California

There’s a fog on the highway

It lays a mist on everything

There’s shadows on the pavement, making shapes I know the name of

There’s a song that you turn on and start to sing

There was blood in the dye

And my blue inside her eyes

On a January night

You said it felt cold but

Much warmer than the winters you had known

From an unforgotten place that you call home

And California, fell into the waves

It feels like everything that’s broken, must come here to break

And I want to tell you something

And there’s no use in telling you I’ve changed

So we rolled the windows up as the sun broke on the dawn

It could have been six years ago when we made that morning song

The sky was turning periwinkle

Reminds me to forget, a little

That colors that she loved, when she was alive

You say I think I’ll find another way to die

There’s a thousand ways to pray

Maybe more ways to be saved

We made it up the coast in just enough days

You only see the stars in the darkest of skies, you said

So we drove off the highway that night

California fell into the waves

It feels like everything that’s broken, must come here to break

And I want to tell you something

But there’s no use in telling you I’ve changed

I wish I could say something to shake

The silence we’ve created

The silence that we’re making

The silence we’ve created

There’s a fog on the highway

It lays a mist on everything

There’s shadows on the pavement, making shapes I know the name of

There’s a melody, it’s coming back to me

I roll the windows down and start to sing
